The Televerse #388- Spotlight on ABC Murders

From the polar vortex to Seattle Snowmageddon, Mother Nature (make that climate change) continues to give, and give, and give. Fortunately, there’s plenty of TV to keep us entertained on our long days indoors. We kick things off this episode with our week in TV, starting with the comedies, Fresh Off the Boat, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and I’m Sorry. We talk some RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars, Kate briefly spotlight(of Shame)s Outlander, and then we round things out with Arrow’s 150th episode and the potential crowning of a new Best Chris, with I Am the Night. Then we head over to the spotlight section and dive in with Sarah Phelps’ latest Agatha Christie miniseries adaptation, Amazon Prime’s ABC Murders.

The Televerse #387- Spotlight on RENT Live

The polar vortex may have left Chicago and the Midwest frozen, but that just meant more time inside to watch TV. Noel and Kate kick things off by talking through a full week in TV, including Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars, The Flash, and Supergirl. Then we move over to the spotlight section and dive in with RENT Live, looking at the source material, the live(ish) production, and much more. Which of us has the show memorized and which is a relative newbie? Tune in to find out, then reach out with your thoughts on RENT and the rest of the week’s TV.

The Televerse #376- Spotlight on The Great British Bake Off Series 9

It’s nearly turkey time, and a much-needed pause in the TV action, but as we head into the holiday season, there’s still plenty of TV to discuss. Noel and Kate kick things off with their week in TV, starting with the comedies, including Fresh Off the Boat, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Bob’s Burgers, The Good Place, and Mom. Then we head over to reality and genre, looking at Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath’s The Jehovah’s Witnesses special, Doctor Who, The Flash, and Black Lightning. Last, we dive in with the latest season of The Great British Bake Off (series 9), aka The Great British Baking Show (Collection 6), newly available on Netflix. Which baker walked away with the cake plate, and which with our hearts, and what’s with this Top Chef finale technical malarkey? Tune in to hear our thoughts, then reach out and let us know what you think.

The Televerse #375- Spotlight on Homecoming

News may have dominated televisions this week, but there was a lot of interesting and memorable TV as well. Noel and Kate kick things off with their week in TV, including the stunning finale of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, a fun Fresh Off the Boat, a return-to-form The Good Place, the premiere of Outlander, a knowing Charmed, and clever DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. Afterward, we dive in with Amazon’s new drama from Mr. Robot’s Sam Esmail, starring Julia Roberts, which may actually be most notable for its irresistible half-hour episodic runtime.

The Televerse #342- Spotlight on Adventure Time: “Blenanas”, “Jake the Starchild”, “Temple of Mars”, and “Gumbaldia”

With the series finale of Adventure Time looming, Noel and Kate take extra time this week to dive deep with the show’s penultimate batch of episodes, spotlighting “Blenanas”, “Jake the Starchild”, “Temple of Mars”, and “Gumbaldia” and speculating about what the final arc may bring (and how very not ready we are to say goodbye to Ooo). Before that, however, there’s plenty of TV to discuss. First up, we look at the week’s reality and comedies, including the season 10 premiere of RuPaul’s Drag Race, the finales of Fresh Off the Boat and Speechless, and another terrific Atlanta. Then we move over to the drama and genre offerings, including another fun The Good Fight, the finale of The X-Files, and strong installments of Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, and iZombie. What are you hoping to see in the final episodes of Adventure Time? Has iZombie run into new trouble with its brain balance? Reach out and let us know what you think.

The Televerse #336- Spotlight on One Day at a Time Season 2

After several reasonably long episodes, we’re back with another marathon podcast this week, as Noel and Kate play catch-up on recent TV. First we look at the week’s reality and comedy, with a deep dive on The Amazing Race, plenty of Top Chef: Colorado and RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars discussion, a midseason check-in on grown-ish, and strong new episodes of Fresh Off the Boat and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Then we move over to the drama and genre offerings, including Kate’s catch up with The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, some pre-finale Star Trek: Discovery talk, and catch-ups with Agents of SHIELD, Supergirl, The Flash, and Arrow. Afterward, it’s time to spotlight the stellar second season of One Day at a Time, as Noel and Kate pick their favorite episodes,  ponder the show’s season-to-season growth, and sidestep spoilers to discuss the series’ specific and universal charms.

The Televerse #335- Spotlight on Mosaic

With Kate still on location, it’s another truncated podcast this week, but there’s still plenty of TV talk to go around.  First up, Noel and Kate dive in with the week’s TV, focusing on reality and comedy. We kick things off with a catch-up with Top Chef: Colorado, break down an underwhelming RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars, talk through strong returns and new episodes from Jane the Virgin, The Detour, and Fresh Off the Boat, ponder repetition on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and then bask in another strong finale for The Good Place. Afterwards, we discuss Steven Soderbergh’s latest storytelling experiment, the joint miniseries and app Mosaic.

The Televerse #323- Spotlight on Alias Grace

With several weighty episodes to break down, we keep the show list manageable this week. First up are the comedies, with looks at a sobriety-focused Mom, Fresh Off the Boat’s charming, Melissa Etheridge-fueled coming out episode, another Adam-heavy Jane the Virgin, and a Swimfan-inspired Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Next up are the drama and genre entries, including the premiere of USA’s Damnation, the penultimate Queen Sugar, the post-baseball return of The Exorcist, and the dreaded Sanvers breakup episode of Supergirl. Afterward, we head over to Netflix and dive in with the latest Margaret Atwood adaptation, the miniseries Alias Grace. What’s the right amount of ‘90s for a ‘90s-set sitcom? Is there anything Jane can do to get us off the dock and aboard the Goode Shippe Jadam? When will Rose wise up and call in the priests, and is there any way for Supergirl to avoid SuperCorp as endgame without betraying the only-just-barely-sub-text? Tune in for Noel and Kate’s takes on the week’s TV, then chime in below with your own.

The Televerse #321- Spotlight on Outlander’s “A. Malcolm”

It’s reunion time this week on the podcast, as Noel checks back in with Outlander for the first time in years just as Claire and Jamie reunite in the much-anticipated “A. Malcolm.” Has time made the heart grow fonder? Does the episode work as well for Noel as regular viewer Kate? How does this episode speak to the traditions of melodrama and romance, and just how prevalent are these genres on TV right now? Before we dive in with Outlander, though, we talk through another fun week in TV. As ever, we kick things off with the comedies, including a particularly strong Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, a somewhat mixed Jane the Virgin, Halloween-themed episodes of Fresh Off the Boat and Broad City, and another excellent The Good Place. Then we move over to the rest of the week’s TV, including a check-in with Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath, a brief look at Queen Sugar and follow-up on Mindhunter season one, a loose discussion of The CW’s superhero shows (Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, and Arrow), and a more in-depth chat about the strong pre-World Series hiatus cliffhanger episode of The Exorcist.  Which musical-inspired Crazy Ex-Girlfriend song was our favorite this week? Which Huang best embodied their Seinfeld counterpart? How are The Flash and Arrow handling their overly large casts, and was that a flirt session between (former) Father Marcus and (Fish and Wildlife) Agent Morrow? (Spoiler alert: Yes, and more please!) Tune in for our thoughts on all of this and more on the latest episode of The Televerse.
