Time jumps, period pieces, and oh-so-relatable moments: TV had a lot to offer this week, giving us plenty to discuss on the podcast. First up, Noel and Kate talk through the highlights of their week in TV, including A Black Lady Sketch Show, Kate’s catch-up with season one of Kim’s Convenience, the much-anticipated premiere of The Terror: Infamy, another lovely Pose, and the season finale of Claws and series finale of Elementary. My recollection was that this season was more focused on the Sam/Ruth will-they-won’t-they than last one. I found Ruth’s plotline the least interesting of the more prominent wrestlers. I know that the wrestling is just the reason for the characters to all be there so we can see the behind-the-scenes, but I found the depiction of characters bored by a repetitive live show itself more boring with the reduction of wrestling. The Christmas Carol wasn’t enough to make up for that, although Freaky Tuesday with that Sheila reveal was quite good.
I found Rhonda and Bash’s personalities surprisingly compatible, which didn’t mean their marriage wasn’t always doomed to failure. Enlisted was alright, but Chris Lowell was my least favorite of the three brothers. His snarkiness there worked far worse for me than Bash’s goofy enthusiasm.
The camping episode had some good stuff, but struck me as rather writerly in going through a number of characters and wondering “What can THIS one open up about?”, which arguably made the lack of material for Reggie all the more glaring. The simplicity of Debbie injuring Ruth in the previous season worked much better for me. I was disappointed that we didn’t get to see the implications of things like Sheila burning her costume and Tamme becoming a “manager” play out.
