The Televerse #468- Make-You-Watchathon 9: Peep Show S1 and The Promised Neverland S1

It’s Make-You-Watchathon time! Noel and Kate ring out the end of the ninth year of the podcast with our annual tradition, with each host picking a show to make the other watch. This year, Kate picked season one of the 2000s Channel 4 favorite Peep Show and Noel picked last year’s The Promised Neverland. Before that, though, there’s a full week in TV to discuss. We kick things off with the dramatic conclusion of Jelle’s Marble Runs: Marble League 2020, both the final event and the closing ceremonies. Then Full Frontal with Samantha Bee is back, Noel introduces the Netflix con anime Great Pretender, Kate checks in with Wynonna Earp, and Noel catches up with Infinity Train Book 3: Cult of the Conductor. We round out the week with the premiere of HBO’s Lovecraft Country, before heading over to the Make-You-Watchathon. Take a listen, then reach out with your thoughts on the week’s TV, Peep Show and The Promised Neverland, our Lucifer season five journey over at Streaming In Place, or anything else. Thank you to everyone who’s been along for the ride with the podcast these past nine years!

The Televerse #464- Spotlight on Los Espookys Season 1

It’s San Diego Comic Con International week! Which we’re skipping, for the first time since 2012. The con may still be happening at home, but if there are no overcrowded convention hallways and persistent background noise, it’s just not SDCC. We’ll hopefully be back next year, but for now, we’re focusing on our standard coverage, and thankfully this week gave us plenty to dive in with. We kick off the episode with Our Week in TV, including a surprising Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, another disconcerting I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, the penultimate RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars, two more thrilling events in Jelle’s Marble Runs: Marble League 2020, and shocking and eventful episodes of Stargirl and Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD. Then we head over to the season spotlight and have fun with the first season of HBO’s horror-tinged comedy Los Espookys. Listen for our thoughts, then reach out with your own take on the week’s TV.

The Televerse #460- Spotlight on Top Boy: Summerhouse Season 2

The beginning of the COVID-19 TV draught has officially hit here at the podcast. There’s still plenty of TV to discuss, but once again, reality is picking up the slack. We kick things off with Our Week in TV, starting with our sole drama and comedy offerings, the premiere of Perry Mason and Full Frontal with Samantha Bee. There’s plenty of reality to discuss, though, including the kickoff of Jelle’s Marble Runs: Marble League 2020, Netflix and Channel 4’s Crazy Delicious season one, more thoughts on Floor is Lava season one, and RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars. Then we wrap up the week with a quick look at Adventure Time: Distant Lands, and longer looks at Stargirl and Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD. Afterward, it’s time for the spotlight section, and we dive in with season two of Netflix’s Top Boy: Summerhouse. Listen for our thoughts, then reach out with your take on the week’s TV and what you’re watching during these lighter weeks.

The Televerse #447- Spotlight on Star Trek: Picard Season 1

We’re rounding out our second week sheltering in place here at the Televerse, and while the world is full of stressors right now, thankfully there’s been a lot of interesting TV to help us take our minds off of them. We kick things off this this episode with our week in comedy and reality, starting with an update on how Full Frontal with Samantha Bee and Late Night with Seth Meyers are handling their at-home shoots. Then we look at the return of One Day at a Time, the antepenultimate Schitt’s Creek, J.K. Simmons’ guest spot on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and RuPaul’s Drag Race’s Ball Ball. Next we head over to the genre and drama offerings, glancing by two emotional, draining Steven Universe Future episodes (because great as they are, we just don’t have the bandwith right now) and diving in with Batwoman, Supergirl, and the finale of Stumptown. Then Noel stans for Guy’s Grocery Games and we head over to the season spotlight section. Both Noel and Kate were excited by the promise shown in the Star Trek: Picard premiere. Did the rest of the season hold up, and should you seek out the show, now that CBS All Access has dropped its paywall, at least for Picard? Tune in, then reach out with your thoughts on Picard, One Day at a Time, Stumptown, and more. And don’t forget to stop by next week as Noel, Kate, and friend of the show Allison Shoemaker continue their journey through Lucifer with week two of Streaming In Place.

The Televerse #446- Spotlight on Ugly Delicious Season 2

The world is dark and scary, let’s talk about delicious food. This week on the podcast, Noel and Kate dive in with season two of Netflix’s Ugly Delicious, David Chang’s travel and food series exploring under-discussed corners of the food world. Does the truncated season two live up to season one, and what do we hope to see in a potential season three? Before that, though, there’s plenty of TV to discuss. We kick things off with some thoughts on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Full Frontal with Samantha Bee’s takes on social distancing, at-home content. Then we talk Top Chef: All-Stars L.A., which is back, and not a moment too soon. Next we talk “World’s Worst” over at RuPaul’s Drag Race and the delightful return of the Judys to Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Steven’s still going through it on Steven Universe Future, and we round out the week with another charming, emotional DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. Take a listen, then reach out with your thoughts on the week’s TV, and make sure to join Noel, Kate, and friend of the show Allison Shoemaker next week for the start of our Lucifer daily binge.

The Televerse #445- Spotlight on Hillary

There’s a lot of intense, anxiety-inducing stuff happening right now. While we wait it out, as best we can, let’s talk some TV. This week on the podcast, Noel and Kate spotlight Hulu’s new four-part Hillary Clinton documentary, Hillary, and wonder whether Frontline maybe did it better back in 2016. Before that, though, there’s a full week in TV. First we look at the comedies, including a roundup of how late night shows are handling the transition to audience-free shows and a look at It’s Personal with Amy Hoggart and the finale of The Unicorn. Then we move to reality, with the second premiere of RuPaul’s Drag Race and the McMillion$ finale. Last is genre, with the return of Steven Universe Future, the Black Lightning season finale, a game-changing The Flash, and an absolutely lovely DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. Take a listen, then reach out with your thoughts on these shows and the rest of your quarantine viewing.

The Televerse #432- Spotlight on Making It Season 2

Technical difficulties plagued the podcast this week, but with TV this interesting to discuss, we had to power through. Note: The audio quality of this episode is not what we’d like, but we’re working to resolve the issue for next week. Thank you for your patience. This week on the podcast, we kick things off with a very full week in TV. First up is the premiere of Steven Universe Future, then Full Frontal with Samantha Bee and catch-ups with His Dark Materials, Emergence, and Stumptown. Then we get in the tunnel with Watchmen, before heading to The CW for Black Lightning and the first three parts of the Arrowverse mega-crossover, Crisis on Infinite Earths (Supergirl, Batwoman, and The Flash). Afterward, it’s time for the spotlight section and this week, we slow things down with the delightfully tranquil second season of Making It. Take a listen, then reach out with your thoughts on the week’s TV, as well as your picks for your favorite TV series and moments of 2019.

The Televerse #413- Spotlight on Veronica Mars Season 4

There’s often drama to spare in summer TV, and this week did not disappoint, with comedies, dramas, and reality delivering twists and turns to spare. Noel and Kate kick things off with the week in TV, starting with the comedies, including the series finale of Jane the Virgin, season finale of Archer: 1999, and mixed episodes of grown-ish and Full Frontal with Samantha Bee. Then Kate talks drama and reality, checking in with Claws, Pose, and SYTYCD, before rounding out the week by breaking down the TV side of the CNN Democratic Presidential Primary Debates with Noel. Then we head over to the season spotlight for a belated look at Veronica Mars season four: the state of the series, our thoughts on the season, and—after a spoiler warning—the season’s big swings. Take a listen, then reach out with your thoughts on Veronica Mars, the week’s TV, and more. Will you be back for season five, fellow (or former) marshmallows?
