The Televerse #320- Halt and Catch Fire with Dennis Perkins

After four terrific seasons, this week we bid farewell to little-show-that-could (thank you, Peak TV!) Halt and Catch Fire. Friend of the show and The A.V. Club contributor Dennis Perkins returns to the DVD Shelf to help us break down the finale and celebrate the ups and downs of a show that started as Mad Men meets the 1980s computer tech race and grew into much, much more. Which shots stick in our minds? Which costumes? And how do we feel about the show’s full-circle ending? Before we dive in with Halt and Catch Fire, though, Noel and Kate have a full week in TV to discuss. We start with the comedies, including the triumphant returns of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Jane the Virgin, season one of American Vandal, the finale of Survivor’s Remorse, and strong installments of Broad City and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Then we move on to the genre and drama offerings, including season one of Mindhunter, the finale of Room 104, another spooky Exorcist, and The CW’s superhero series, Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl. Who’s out of line, WhiJo or Darryl? Can Adam contend in the pantheon of Jane’s beaus? Is John Cho still our only reason for watching The Exorcist, and what’s up with that beeping in Arrow’s score? And of course, #WhoDrewTheD-cks? Tune in for this and more, then leave your thoughts on Halt and Catch Fire and the rest of the week’s TV below.

The Televerse #299- Supergirl Season 2 with Dr. Elizabeth Bridges

Finale season pushes ahead, full steam, prompting another of our trademark marathon episodes. We kick things off with the week in comedy, reality, and drama, looking at the finales of Archer: Dreamland, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Jane the Virgin, and Elementary as well as a Drag Race shocker and a less-than-stellar The Handmaid’s Tale. After a quick break, it’s time for the genre offerings, including the much-hyped Laura-centric American Gods, the long-awaited return of Twin Peaks, and the finales of Samurai Jack, The Flash, and Arrow. Then to round out the discussion, friend of the podcast Dr. Elizabeth Bridges returns to help us dive deep on Supergirl’s finale and season two overall, from the highs (Sanvers, Lena, Cat) to the lows (Mon-El, James, basically all the guys), and everything in-between.

The Televerse #268- China Beach with Chris Becker

With Noel still under the weather and Kate taking a rare vacation, it’s another short episode this week on the podcast. That being said, there’s still plenty of entertaining TV to discuss, including the season premiere of our beloved Jane the Virgin, another Halloween installment of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and fun episodes of Fresh Off the Boat and Saturday Night Live. Noel also checks in on This is Us and Pitch, and we both heap more love for Supergirl. Afterward, Associate Professor Chris Becker from Notre Dame, creator of News for TV Majors and host of Aca-Media, joins us at the DVD Shelf to discuss the criminally underseen female-driven Vietnam medical drama China Beach.

The Televerse #239- Happy Endings with Kelly Lawler

It’s a 2016 Televerse first this week, with Kate and Noel on opposite sides of this week’s DVD Shelf pick. First, though, we kick off the podcast with our week in comedy, including the premiere of Netflix’s The Ranch and wedding-themed episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Jane the Virgin, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Next up are the genre entries, including a punny Arrow and straight-up delightful Supergirl, and we wrap up our week in TV with the dramas, including the premieres of Rush Hour, The Path, and Grantchester. Afterward, we head to the DVD Shelf with Kelly Lawler of USA Today and The Mothership podcast to break down what does, and doesn’t, work for us about the hangout comedy Happy Endings.

The Televerse #218- Holiday Omnibus 2 with Deepayan Sengupta

Our usual format is back this week on the podcast, with PopOptiq’s own Deepayan Sengupta joining Kate to talk through a very full week in TV. First we look at the comedies, including fantastic episodes of You’re the Worst and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and catch up with Other Space season one. Next are the genre offerings, including the premieres of Les Revenants season two, Grimm season five, and Ash vs Evil Dead season one, as well as plenty of superhero and The CW fare. We finish out the week’s TV with the dramas, with a deep dive on The Affair and a timed roundup of Kate’s notable drama viewing, and afterwards, we head to the DVD Shelf for the second installment of the Holiday Omnibus. This time, Deepayan and Kate look at three memorable (or otherwise, as it turns out) Halloween episodes: Quantum Leap’s “Boogieman”, Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s “Halloween II”, and the beloved classic, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.

The Televerse #135- The Twilight Zone with Scott Meslow

With comedy finales galore and plenty of semi-cathartic drama, it was a full week in TV, giving us a lot to dive into on the podcast. First we take a look at the comedies, including the pilot of Friends with Better Lives, then we break down the comedy finales, including Chozen, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Broad City, and HIMYM, and then we dig in with the hour-longs, from The Amazing Race: All-Stars to Hannibal to a tearful The Good Wife. Afterward, Scott Meslow, Entertainment Editor of The Week.com, returns to the DVD Shelf to help us take a look at the amazing, classic, and utterly unique The Twilight Zone.
