At the end of the first Top of the Lake, the awful police chief said that Johnno wasn’t Matt’s biological son. I assumed he was lying, but it seems the show stuck with it.
Alexander doesn’t exactly “run” the brothel, but he does own the building and charge the madame rent. The madame gets to decide not to permit Mary to join though.
The Deuce is not about the birth of misogyny. It’s about a shift AWAY FROM the world Mad Men began in.
Franco’s wife is not nearly as significant a character as Alexander or Mary in Top of the Lake: China Girl.
